Separating Legalism From Modesty

I tapped a few words out on Google and waited for the search engines to pick up some information. I found many articles and posts on this subject, and I scrolled through a few. I probably sat for nearly an hour reading different articles, and by the time I had finished, I was more confused than before!

What had I searched for? What modesty looked like and how it is defined in today’s culture.

I don’t suggest doing that. First of all, you are going to hear so many different views and opinions, and you most likely leave more discouraged than encouraged. I read posts that went from one extreme to the other, and I sat back thinking, why do I even have a blog about this? I certainly don’t have it all figured out, and hearing everyone else talk about it gives me a headache. (My hope is that when you read my posts that you will NOT leave more confused than you were before. Hopefully.)

So, in this post I am going to talk about legalism and modesty. How to know when you have strayed from following God and began following a set of rules. Now, it’s good to have morals and boundaries and values, of course, but I’m talking about controversial issues amongst Christians that leave you utterly…confused. Like modesty.

Who Set Your Modesty Standards In Place?

Whatever you deem appropriate or inappropriate to wear, who influenced your opinion? A popular author, actor, speaker? If the answer is a human being, you may likely be confused when bombarded with different opinions. Because after all, this other person seems to really have it together, so why don’t you follow her example? Or maybe this other lady; she seems to be really close to the Lord, maybe she’s right? You HAVE to search God’s word and seek His will for yourself, or you are never going to have peace with whatever decision you make. You can have role models, you can have godly examples, but at the end of the day God is the one who should be doing the convicting. Not ‘so and so.’

Is it Biblical?

Honestly, do you even know if it’s Biblical? Like I said before, if you were simply following someone’s example, it’s very possible that you don’t even know what God’s word has to say about it. This is very important! If you struggle with what legalism is and what it isn’t, then there’s no better place to look than the Bible!

Are You At Peace?

God will bring us through things that aren’t comfortable to grow us, but sometimes what makes us uncomfortable is simply there by our own doing. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to have it together all the time. You don’t even have to know all the answers to controversial questions. Study, pray, learn, grow. Don’t worry about it so much. God will reveal to you what He wishes to reveal in His timing. Just seek Him and be open to His ways. He may ask you to make a radical life change, or He may not.

I hope this post was helpful. Not confusing. ; ) Thanks for visiting and have a blessed weekend!

  1. You did not make it more confusing, or complicated than it needs to be. It’s true everyone has different opinions. We do need to search God’s word for ourselves, and let Him lead us to our convictions, not other human beings. (Although, they can be very helpful too!) This is one subject that most people just leave alone. Thank you so much for having a blog to address this! ❤ 🙂
